Franklin County Courthouse Restoration

Renaissance Roofing, Inc fully replaced the existing architectural sheet metal on the Franklin County Courthouse bell tower in Hampton, Iowa. The new metal is Follansbee Steel’s Turn Coated Stainless Steel Two (TCSII). The metal was primed and painted to emulate the limestone on other parts of the building.

We duplicated and manufactured all the metal components with our own equipment to exactly match the 1890’s work. This included using brake metal, stamped or pressed metal, and metal formed on planishing hammers and an English wheel. It also required hundreds of hours of hand hammering parts on a lead shot bag.

In addition to replacing all the metal, we made substantial repairs to the 5 copper statues, replaced nearly 300 feet of the timber framing within the tower structure, and replaced 5 flat roof systems on the building.
